I don’t know why but sometimes I feel that I’m compelled to define things, and today I’m compelled to define the word “community”,  I’ve heard lots of definitions of that word specially in the technical field, some I did like and some I didn’t at all. So I aggregated the things that I did like and my thoughts about community in the following

1.       Community is about people

2.       Community is not a project with a limited budget

3.       Community is about fun not business

4.       Community is about gathering of people with the same interests

5.       Communities can’t be used for marketing or else it’s not a community, it’s another network marketing scheme

6.       People go to these gathering not for profit but for the fun of it

7.       Communities are not job fairs

8.       Technical communities is about friendly geeks whom love code and technology and love to socialize with each other not HR recruiters setting at booths receiving fresh grads CVs

9.       Communities are offline, so people can meet and have fun talking about their common interests

10.   Online communities turn into Please_do_my_homework forums, so it must have an offline gatherings or sooner or later it dies

11.   Communities don’t have leaders, only volunteer people whom coordinate things the same way when somebody go and buy cinema tickets for the rest of the group

12.   Communities are anarchy, everybody is free to do as s/he please

I hope that you agree with me with my own definition of community, if you have some extra thing to say please let me know
