Sohag Case Study

Because I live in a country where stupidity rules, the army draft system is still applied here in Egypt, and because Egypt isn’t only just cursed by stupidity it’s also infested by bureaucracy then I’m required to travel all along to where I’ve been born to register for the army draft, no I’m not exaggerating, it’s the reality in Egypt that I have to live with. So now I’m in Sohag city, the city that I’ve been born in. So, why Sohag would require a case study? Ok, let’s cut the story short with the few following facts about Sohag. Sohag don’t have any food delivery service. ATM use in Sohag is considered as something strange and most ATM machines are broken and don’t support all ATM cards. There are no flower shops in Sohag. There are no musical Shops in Sohag or musical studios or any musical gear shops at all. There are no big malls in Sohag. The average super market you find in any street in Cairo is very rare in Sohag. There are no clothes or shoes stores for big brands, for example Nike or Adidas is too much to ask for in here. The average salary in Sohag is less than 400 L.E and I know lots of people here whom take less than 200 L.E. whom consider a salary of 600 L.E is like a dream. There is no bus network in Sohag. Not all the TV channels are received in Sohag. There is no sort of any private business that hires more than 100 employees in Sohag. Unemployment is the default for any guy under 25 years and employments isn’t acceptable for women in most families. Most girls’ optimum dream in Sohag after graduation is to get married and stay at home to raise children, no career dreams at all. Career path in Sohag sounds more like a joke. Marriage rate is so low in Sohag. Sohag City is so small that you can travel on foot between its most important parts in less than hour, or you can take a cap and travel all the entire city for no more than 5 L.E anyway in no more than 10 minutes, also there is no traffic jams in Sohag, and still every one want to buy a car!! Ah, by the way, Women driving cars in Sohag is more like a taboo. Most building here is less than 6 floors; buildings that are more than 6 floors are so rare. Buildings with elevators in Sohag are less than 10.There is cars in Sohag that are one century old but are still in use till today. After 1:00 am, there will be one car passing by the street every 10 minutes. It’s a main street!!

Although the above facts, cyber cafes are very common in Sohag!! And shops that sell cell phones and its accessories in Sohag are so profitable. Everybody in Sohag have a cell phone, although s/he might be not using it the whole day or even employed in the first place to need it!! if somebody in Sohag sees you talking on a cell phone for more than 10 minutes then s/he will assume that you’re faking it and you are just bragging about your brand new cell phone!! People simply here buy cell phones to brag about it. Most people would prefer to buy a cell phone over a computer, because simply you can take your cell phone everywhere to brag about it where that can’t be done with a computer. Nobody in Sohag uses computers for more than movies, music and games, nobody here use their computer to read mails or work with. 1 out of every 10 internet users in Sohag that is constantly reading his mail and it’s always “he”. 5 of every 10 internet users in Sohag have mails in the first place.

I love the internet

Hello guys, I haven’t been blogging for a while (blame twitter, it’s like continuous blogging that you don’t feel like you need to blog anymore) so I don’t know why but it seems that I’m really in a good mood, I’m feeling very good about the internet, so I thought that I should give that almighty invention some love and appreciation. It might sound crazy but we all have to admit it the same way I’m going to admit it now, I love the internet, the internet made me, the internet gave me the ultimate pleasure, the internet have changed me to the person who I am now!! (Not that great person but at least better than the one I used to be before)

Do I sound crazy? Do I sound like an internet addict? Maybe, but addiction is only bad when it drives to a worst state, in the contrary to my internet addiction, it derived to me to a better state, it gave me a job, and good career path, it gave me knowledge about topics I was never aware of, it gave me the forbidden knowledge that nobody can talk about it her in Egypt, and most of all, it gave me a great source of financial profit!!

I consider mental pleasure is one of the best pleasures, why? Because it can last for hours or days, for example you can’t have pleasure out eating more than a full hour and the same applies for other sort of physical pleasures (you can use your imagination for the rest), I consider watching a movie as a mental pleasure the same like reading a book with the only difference that information is transmitted to you through visual and sound means rather than text, and the internet have supplied me with a fortune of movies of continuous hours of mental pleasure, of course not every movie can supply me with such pleasure, I’ve a delicate taste that is kind of picky. Not just movies, the internet have supplied me with days of music for hundreds of bands with several different tastes that helped me to form a musical taste that is rare in our Egyptian culture that helped me to learn playing drums and guitars, and helped me to understand why our Arabic music is so lame, because everybody whom thinks that Arabic music is music in the first place is really a miserable creature because s/he didn’t have the chance to listen to real music so s/he can judge what is music is. So I really have to thank the internet for introducing me to the real music that isn’t available in any musical store in Egypt.

Internet didn’t only give me entertainment, internet gave me knowledge and from it I learned how to judge and differentiate facts from pseudo science theories that our Egyptian culture is full with, not just scientific knowledge but also knowledge about my career that made me a successful software developer (if you think so). From the internet I’ve learned what  debate logical fallacies are, that by learning to recognize them enhanced my ability to debate with somebody that is trying to use them on me. Through the internet I learned a lot about history, philosophy, pharmacy, psychology, chemistry, biology, military and a lot more. Every topic I found myself interested to know about was a few clicks away, every book I wished to read was also a few clicks away. Through the internet I was introduced to great but small writers, writers that you won’t find them on El-Ahram newspaper but have more logic and sense than the whole El-Ahram newspaper staff, they was also a click away, just by subscribing to their RSS feeds of their blogs. Not just non famous writers, but also famous and best selling writers, so I learned how a good writer looks like, and I also knew that most of our Egyptian writers that we read for in our newspapers are just a punch of fakes.

Through reading for great writers online I became a good writer myself, I learned how to express myself, my feelings, my emotions, my likes and dislikes with only words, which is a talent that I lacked before, I hardly was able to write a paragraph of 10 lines, now as you can see, I’m not bad, I’ve even became a published writer at a magazine, talking about topics I wasn’t aware of before, but now thanks to the internet, I’m not just aware of it I even write about it (of course this is also my personal blog, so don’t judge my writing skills by this blog post)

So the bottom line should be (literally), I love the internet.

have i seen this before?

Your Dominant Intelligence is Logical-Mathematical Intelligence
You are great at finding patterns and relationships between things.
Always curious about how things work, you love to set up experiments.
You need for the world to make sense - and are good at making sense of it.
You have a head for numbers and math ... and you can solve almost any logic puzzle.

You would make a great scientist, engineer, computer programmer, researcher, accountant, or mathematician.
